Every month, on the Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha, people quietly step into an old rhythm, worshipping Lord Shiva. This day is called Masik Shivaratri. It is not the grand once-a-year Mahashivaratri, but a smaller, steady reminder that devotion doesn’t need big occasions. Faith grows when it is nurtured repeatedly, in simple ways. On this night, devotees fast, pray, and worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati till late hours. For those who are unmarried, it is said to bring the blessing of marriage. For married women, it keeps the household peaceful and fortunate. And for everyone, it is a chance to find inner calm and see wishes fulfilled,  if observed with sincerity. This August, the vrat carries extra power because it coincides with rare yogas that multiply blessings.

Masik Shivaratri August 2025: Date and Time

Date: Thursday, August 21, 2025

Chaturdashi Tithi begins: 12:44 pm on August 21

Chaturdashi Tithi ends: 11:55 am on August 22

Shivaratri Puja (Nishita Kaal): 11:52 pm, August 21 to 12:39 am, August 22 (44 minutes)

This late-night window, Nishita Kaal, is considered the most charged time of the night. People believe prayers offered during this time carry a special strength.

Why does this Masik Shivaratri feel extra special?

This year, the Bhadrapada Masik Shivaratri overlaps with Guru Pushya Yoga, a very auspicious alignment. Pushya Nakshatra, seen as the star of prosperity, falls on a Thursday, the day of Lord Vishnu. For Shivaratri to coincide with this nakshatra is considered a double blessing. That means prayers are believed to bring not just spiritual purification, but also prosperity and protection in worldly life. Many people see it as the right time to begin something new, buy gold, or make offerings to both Shiva and Vishnu.

How to perform the Masik Shivaratri puja (Puja Vidhi)

The rituals are simple, but they carry heart:

Morning vow: Take a bath and promise (sankalp) to observe the fast. Some fast without food or water, others with fruits, milk, or light sattvic food. It fully depends upon what works for you.

Spiritual focus: Spend the day in prayer, avoid negativity, and repeat Om Namah Shivaya.

**### Night worship (Nishita Kaal): **

  • Bathe the Shivling with water, then offer milk, curd, honey, ghee, and water again.

  • Decorate with Bilva leaves, Dhatura flowers, and sandalwood paste.

  • Light a ghee lamp and incense, then offer fruits and sweets.

  • Chant Om Namah Shivaya with each offering.

  • End by chanting or listening to Shiva Aarti and bhajans. Many keep vigil through the night, telling stories and singing in Shiva’s name.

  • Break the fast the next morning only after giving food or donations to Brahmins or the needy, then share prasad with your family.

Spiritual significance of Masik Shivaratri

On the surface, Masik Shivaratri may look like fasting and night rituals. But deep down, it is about transformation. The night is symbolic. It is about the victory of light over darkness, of clarity over fear, ego, and attachment.  Fasting helps the body and mind feel lighter. Prayer and worship call in strength, peace, and detachment from needless worries.

  • For couples, it blesses the relationship with understanding.

  • For unmarried people, it is said to bring the right prospects.

  • For seekers, it offers clarity and freedom from negativity.

Shiva is stillness, the truth behind all noise. Parvati is love, care, and energy. Worshipping them together is like inviting balance into your own life. This Masik Shivaratri is not just another date to tick off. It is a gentle invitation to pause. To set aside jealousy, greed, and anger, and to return to something simpler and softer.
