The festival gathers momentum. By the third night of Navratri, the devotional air feels heavier, the lamps glow brighter, and the prayers gain strength. Day 3 belongs to Maa Chandraghanta, the goddess whose very presence balances ferocity with grace.

Her name comes from Chandra (moon) and Ghanta (bell), for the crescent moon that adorns her forehead like a bell. Her open third eye and ringing bell signify alertness, courage, and the power to shatter negativity. Worshipping her is not just about fighting outer enemies—it is about conquering fear, indecision, and doubt within yourself. Just as the moonlight calms the night but the sound of a bell can stir an army, Maa Chandraghanta teaches us to balance peace with strength.

Who is Maa Chandraghanta?

Image

Maa Chandraghanta is the married form of Parvati after her union with Lord Shiva. Her story is both dramatic and symbolic. After their marriage, the demon Tarakasura continued his rampage. Knowing he could only be destroyed by Shiva and Parvati’s child, he sent Jatukasura, the bat-demon, to attack. The skies were covered with darkness, swarmed by bats, threatening all of creation.

Parvati remembered that she was not just Shiva’s consort, she was Shakti itself, the very embodiment of power. She adorned her crown with the crescent moon, rode into battle on a tiger, and rang her mighty bell to scatter the bats. The sound weakened Jatukasura, and with her sword and weapons, she destroyed him. This is why she is depicted with:

  • Ten arms, holding a trident, sword, mace, lotus, bow, arrow, rosary, and kamandalu.

  • Half-moon bell on her forehead.

  • Tiger mount, symbolising courage and ferocity.

She is fierce enough to slay demons, yet compassionate enough to bless her devotees with peace.

The Solar Plexus Chakra and Venus Connection

Maa Chandraghanta presides over the Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura), located near the navel. This chakra governs self-esteem, confidence, and decision-making. When blocked, we feel insecure or indecisive. When balanced, we feel courageous, steady, and radiant.

She also rules over Venus, the planet of love, beauty, and prosperity. Under her energy, Venus’s charm combines with strength, teaching us that true prosperity comes with balance, not indulgence.

Listening to chakra and planetary frequencies during meditation can deepen your sadhana:

  • Courage: To face inner and outer fears.

  • Balance: Between gentleness and strength.

  • Prosperity: Venus’s energy brings abundance and harmony.

  • Spiritual Alertness: The bell and third eye symbolise constant awareness.

Without her fierce protection, devotion remains vulnerable to distraction and fear. With her, the journey of Navratri becomes one of both courage and peace.

Why Worship Maa Chandraghanta?

Worshipping Maa Chandraghanta on Day 3 is especially powerful for those struggling with fear, insecurity, or repeated obstacles. Her blessings help devotees overcome restlessness, defend themselves from negativity, and move forward with renewed strength.

She reminds us that peace is not passive. It needs to be guarded with strength and awareness. Prosperity is not about indulgence but about living in balance. And true courage is not always loud. It is quiet, steady, and unwavering, just like the soft glow of the crescent moon that shines on her forehead.

Day 3 of Navratri is about courage wrapped in grace. Maa Chandraghanta rides her tiger not to spread fear, but to protect love, loyalty, and prosperity. When you wear royal blue, offer milk sweets, and chant her mantras, remember that the sound of her bell is more than a call to battle. It is a call to awaken your own inner strength and to face life with calm determination.

On Day 1, Maa Shailputri taught us the power of grounding and new beginnings. On Day 2, Maa Brahmacharini showed us the value of devotion and discipline. Now, on Day 3, Maa Chandraghanta reminds us that courage is not noise; it is grace in action.
