Why Goddess Tara Is Worshipped: The Story Behind Tara Jayanti

Ancient texts tell two stories about her origin, and both happen in moments of crisis.

The Samudra Manthan story

The first involves the famous churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan). During the manthan, a poison called Halahala erupted from the water. It was so toxic it threatened to melt the entire universe. Lord Shiva swallowed it to save everyone, but the heat from it made him unconscious. At that time, Goddess Tara appeared, pulled Shiva into her lap and fed him like a mother. That intense, maternal healing instantly cured him from the effects of the poison.

The Ugratara and Hayagriva story

Another text points to a demon named Hayagriva who was causing absolute havoc on Earth. To stop him, Goddess Mahakali took a terrifying, blue-coloured avatar. This form came to be known as Ugratara. She was so intensely powerful that even the great sage Maharishi Vasistha had to learn a highly secret way just to worship her properly and handle her energy.

Tara Jayani Puja Vidhi

Doing the Tara Jayanti Puja at home is easy. You do not need a lot of setup or stuff. Here is a quick guide you can follow to perform the puja in the right way.

  • Start clean: Wake up early, take a bath, and put on fresh clothes.

  • Prepare the puja space: Place a wooden stool in your prayer area. Cover it with a clean cloth and set an idol or picture of Goddess Tara on it.

  • Offerings for Goddess Tara: It is said that Maa Tara is fond of blue and red flowers. So, place them in front of her, along with some water and milk. Also offer simple sweets, either from the market or you can prepare them at home too.

  • Light a diya: Light a ghee or oil lamp. Burn incense to clear the air in the room.

  • Chant the mantra: Sit down, close your eyes, and chant Om Hreem Streem Hum Phat to invoke blessings. You can also choose to listen to Tara Mantra on our app, and check out the SoulChants section for more such devotional tracks.

  • Night Worship: Maa Tara’s energy is believed to be intimately tied to the removal of darkness. So, doing a small prayer or simply re-lighting a diya after sunset is considered very auspicious. It helps you to connect with her energy and receive blessings.

What the 2026 Planetary Alignment Means for Tara Jayanti

In 2026, the sky on Tara Jayanti is a bit heavy. The Sun, Saturn, and Neptune are all together in the water sign of Pisces. Saturn is also sitting in its own specific star zone called Uttara Bhadrapada. What does that actually mean for you? Pisces is all about endings, and Saturn is known for strict karmic lessons. So, this day is asking you to part from your old baggage, which weighs you down.  At the same time, the Moon and Jupiter are sitting in Gemini. Gemini rules the mind and the voice. This is a massive hint. If you sit down and chant her mantra out loud, the sound vibrations will hit much harder than usual. The planets are literally aligned to help you clear your head and start over.
